Medical Informatics Section Continuing Education Needs Assessment

Initial results

Section has 456 members (April 29, 1999). Survey distributed to 435 listserv subscribers, 17 members by mail, and 120 members with e-mail not subscribed to the list. 69 responses received as of 5/12/99. Response rate: 15%

Institution Type:

  • 46 (67%) Academic
  • 14 (20%) Hospital
  • 4 (6%) Research
  • 3 (4%) Special
  • 2 (3%) Other
Only 2 respondents were students.

NOTE: Percentages throughout the rest of the page do not equal 100, because each respondent was allowed multiple responses.

The factors that were considered important (above a 3 rating) and in order of importance are:

  • Content
  • Location
  • Fee
  • Faculty

The top three methods of CE offerings were:

  1. Hands On Training (71%)
  2. Workshop (65%)
  3. Seminar (42%)

Internet/Distance Learning was 4th; 11 people chose Self-Directed Learning as one of their top three items.

This prompted the section to develop the Self-Education Resources Project.

The seven topics of most interest (in ranked order) are:

  1. Digital/Virtual Libraries
  2. Education and Training in Informatics
  3. Database Access/Construction/Delivery
  4. Distance Learning Technologies
  5. Bioinformatics
  6. Knowledge Acquisition and Management
  7. HTML/SGML/XML
Four additional topics were chosen by more than 25% of respondents:
  • Instructional Multimedia
  • Human Factors/Usability
  • Web Page Design
  • JAVA Scripting
Course level (Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced) may be considered in future analysis.

Where would you be more likely to attend a CE course?

  • 38 (55%) Annual MLA Meeting
  • 38 (55%) Annual MLA Chapter/Regional Meeting
  • 29 (42%) Other Organization Meeting (AMIA or Local/Regional Group)
  • 14 (20%) Virtual Course
  • 21 (30%) Depends on Content
