Midyear Report 2000-2001

Progress on Goals and Objectives

Goal 1: Professional Development

Objective 1. To take the lead on at least two section-sponsored programs for the annual meeting.

The Medical Informatics Section (MI) is the lead sponsor for two sessions at the MLA 2001 annual meeting:

  1. "Core Competencies for Librarians in Informatics-intensive Environments," a combined invited and contributed paper session co-sponsored with the Public Health/Health Administration, Leadership & Management, and Medical Library Education sections.

  2. "Education Outside the Classroom 1: Libraries Roles in Distance Learning," co-sponsored by the Educational Media Technology section (EMTS).

The Medical Informatics Section (MI) is the lead sponsor for two sessions at the MLA 2001 annual meeting:

  1. "Education Outside the Classroom 2: Decision Support and Information Systems Training in Clinical Settings," sponsored by EMTS and co-sponsored with Hospital Libraries.

  2. "IAIMS: The next generation," sponsored by the History of the Health Sciences section, an invited session including speakers who can offer a historical perspective on IAIMS work for the past 20 years.

  3. Getting All the Oars In the Water: Collaborative Teams and Strategies for Technology Implementation and Support, sponsored by EMTS.

Objective 2. To co-sponsor with the Hospital Libraries and Educational Media and Technology sections a pre-conference symposium entitled "Developing Medical Library Portals." Plans are underway for an invited/panel discussion entitled "What is an Information Portal, and Why Should I Care?" The session is an Information Technology Forum with the Hospital Libraries taking the lead sponsorship role. Brenda Seago represents the MI section on the planning team.

Objective 3. To co-sponsor with the Public Health/Health Administration Section (PH/HA) an electronic journal club. Lead sponsorship is the PH/HA and has been coordinated via Kris Alpi, who is a member of both sections.

Objective 5. To provide leadership and programming for the International Congress on Medical Librarianship (ICML).

The three MI-sponsored sessions at the ICML went very well. Scott Plutchak coordinated the sessions, along with Steve MacCall, Betsy Humphreys, Elizabeth Woods, and Nancy Roderer. The sessions included the following:

  1. Librarians and Informatics: Making it Work, held Sunday, July 2, 2000. Presenters included: Gary Byrd, Elizabeth Eaton/ Susan Albright, Eileen H. Stanley, and Joan Ash.

  2. Advanced Technologies for Digital Libraries, held Tuesday, July 4, 2000. Presenters included: Jim Duncan/ Dick Eimas, Gillian Goldsmith Mayman, Debra Ketchell/ Emily Hull/ Leilani, St. Anna/ Wei-Laung Hu/ Leo Lai, and Steven MacCall/ Ian Gibson/ Ana Cleveland/ David McMillan/ Russell Kingston.

  3. The Visible Human Project: An International Imaging Resource, held Wednesday, July 5, 2000. Speakers included: Michael Ackerman, Francesco Pinciroli/ Robert Hersch/ Andreas Pommert.

Goal 2. Advocacy.

Objective 1. To award the section-sponsored Career Development Award to two individuals based upon a competitive application/review process.

Nunzia Guise has coordinated listserv announcements soliciting interested candidates.

Goal 6. Information Technology

David Yamamoto has done a masterful job coordinating the information and updates to the MI home page

Other: Two additional items of note. The MI section supported the International Cooperation Section's motion to support global goals related to professional development, advocacy and information technology. Namely, the motion requested permission to raise funds to support their Sister Library initiative. Finally, Elizabeth Eaton's name has been submitted to MLA for potential representation to the IFLA Information Technology committee.
