2004/2005 Goals and Objectives
Goal 1: Recruitment, Membership and Leadership in the Profession
Objective 1: Encourage MLA members to join the MI Section.
Objective 2: Revise the MIS website to make it compatible with
current technologies and easier to update.
Objective 3: Promote use of the member's directory on the MIS
website to develop an electronic portfolio of members. This tool can be
used for improving communication and identifying possible areas of expertise
for collaboration.
Goal 2. Life Long Learning
Objective 1: Conduct an electronic journal club session on technology
trends and forecasting using established journal club procedures. (Wallace
McClendon, Professional Development Liaison, will lead this effort)
Objective 2: Expand the Self-Education Resource Project on the
MIS website. This project was started in 1999 and includes suggested resources
for self-education in informatics. (Wallace McClendon, Professional Development
Liaison and Kris Alpi will manage this effort.)
Goal 3: Advocacy
Objective 1: Award the Medical Informatics Section/MLA Career
Development Grant to two individuals based on a competitive application
review process. The section has provided this award since 1997. This objective
helps fulfill the section's goals for advocacy and professional development.
Objective 2: Contribute $1000 from the Section to the Donald A.B.
Lindberg Research Fellowship Fund. The purpose of this fellowship, established
in 2004, is to fund research aimed at expanding the research knowledgebase,
linking the information services provided by librarians to improved health
care and advances in biomedical research.
Goal 4: Creating and Communicating our Knowledge
Objective 1: Sponsor a contributed paper panel on providing clinical
information at point of care with the Education and Media Technologies
Section at the 2005 annual meeting.
Objective 2: Sponsor an invited speaker session entitled "Educating
Ourselves: The Future is Now" (draft title) with the Technical Services
Section at the 2005 annual meeting. The speakers for this session will
be based on the outcome of a survey to identify people with cutting edge
roles in the intersection of medical informatics and medical librarianship.
Objective 3: Co-sponsor a session with the Molecular Biology and
Genomics SIG at the 2005 annual meeting. This session may include both
invited speakers and contributed papers.
Goal 5: Building a Network of Partners
Objective 1: Expand journal club participation internationally
and to other professional library organizations.
Objective 2: Promote use of the MIS directory/electronic portfolio
section of the MIS website to help MIS and MLA members find others with
similar interests.
Objective 3: Investigate partnerships with other professional
organizations or MLA sections/SIGS for projects. The first project we'll
use as a model is the "Emerging Trends" website project.
