MEDICAL INFORMATICS SECTION
ANNUAL REPORT 2006/07
Bylaws revisions were approved as compliant by the MLA bylaws committee.
The revisions to the MIS Bylaws have been posted on the website, and will
be voted on at the annual business meeting in Philadelphia. Many revisions
are cosmetic. The major revision involves the section's ability to vote
by "distributed ballot." Revisions put the MIS Bylaws in compliance
with MLA Bylaws.
Goal 1: Recruitment, Membership and Leadership in the Profession
Objective 1: Increase MI Section membership
86 members have joined MIS from March 1, 2006 - February 28, 2007
447 Total members (402 Individual & 45 Institutional)
Objective 3: Obtain the section members list quarterly
MIS section members list obtained from MLA headquarters quarterly
Objective 4: Send letters to new members and encourage participation
The membership committee sends a welcome email to new members and encourages
active participation in the section.
New MIS members have joined MIS committees and are active in the section
Objective 5: Provide a slate of qualified candidates
The nominating committee gathered a strong slate of candidates to run
in the election. The following officers were elected by a majority vote.

Objective 6: Maintain the listserv
New members are added quarterly. The listserv was reissued with MIS only
members after February 28, 2007
Goal 2: Life Long Learning
Objective 1: Provide strong sponsored programs at the annual conference
MIS sponsored the following session programs at the annual meeting: Revolutionizing
Discovery through Text Mining co-sponsored with Molecular Biology and
Genomics SIG (invited speaker session)
1,776 Uses of Technology, (contributed paper session) is co-sponsored
with Educational Media & Technology and Public Services Sections.
Top Technology Trends: Where is the Revolution Leading Us Next? (Invited
Speaker/Panel Session)
Objective 4: Keep track of MIS members' participation in meeting activities
MIS members presenting papers or posters, receiving awards or being recognized
for achievements at the annual meeting were identified and the information
was posted on the MIS web site.
Goal 3: Advocacy
Objective 1: Award MIS/MLA Career Development Grants
This grant was not awarded this year
Objective 2: Contribute to the Donald A.B. Lindberg Research Fund
MIS plans to continue donating to the fund until the fund is stable
Goal 4: Creating and Communicating our Knowledge
Objective 1: Collaborate with other MLA sections and (SIGs)
MIS is co-sponsoring and working with the Molecular Biology and Genomics
SIG on a symposium for MLA 2008. The symposium titled "State of the
art: successes, challenges, and realities of library involvement in bioinformatics"
has moved forward from submitted idea (December 2006) to invited proposal
(April 2007) and being given final consideration by the MLA Continuing
Education Committee at the annual meeting in Philadelphia 2007. Approval
notifications are in July 2007.
Objective 2: Provide up-to-date and archival MIS data on the webpage.
The website has been updated as new information is received and reviewed.
Many inactive or out-of-date links have been archived.
A. Form a web committee
The committee reviewed the MIS website two separate times for consistency
and checked the links to make sure all connections were working. This
task is invaluable to maintaining a vibrant web presence with current
and accurate information.
Goal 5: Building a Network of Partners
Objective 1: Sponsor a program of experts on "new technologies"
