MLA Medical Informatics Section
Annual Report 2002-2003

Goal 1: Professional Development

The Medical Informatics Section has started an electronic journal club on Knowledge Management. Taneya Koonce is coordinating this series. In early March, Taneya communicated to the MIS listserv the status of the journal club reporting active participation by 37 members. The journal club began February 10th, 2003 and will continue to August.

Rebecca Jerome, with assistance from Kathy Szigeti, has developed an online module for sharing best practices for literature-filtering and evidence-based services. The module will be available online to section members in March 2003. In early March, Rebecca communicated to the listserv the progress of the module and will get initial feedback from interested volunteers.

The electronic journal club on Technology Trends and Forecasting was not started this year. Wallace McLendon, who was to manage this effort, was unable to begin the series due to time constraints. He will consider offering the journal club for the 2003-2004 year.

Goal 2: Advocacy

The MIS/MLA Career Development Grant was awarded to two recipients this year: Marcy Brown, Forbes Regional Hospital, Monroeville, PA and Mark Vrabel, Oncology Nursing Society, Pittsburgh, PA.

The MIS Directory was made available to section members in early March 2003. At the time of this writing, approximately 9% of the membership have begun entering their profile information. The directory was adapted by Eskind Web Team member John Clark from a tool created at Eskind by Jun Kunavut. The directory was created to show the potential of such a tool to enhance and facilitate communication among MLA/section members and to assist in identifying potential areas of collaboration. John Clark & Martin Brennan have managed efforts to develop and publicize the availability of the directory. They will send two more reminders to membership before the Annual Meeting.

Goal 3: Information Technology

The section is sponsoring or co-sponsoring five programs for the 2003 Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA. Section Chair-Elect, Jean Sayre, has managed this effort. MIS involvement in the programming for the meeting is as follows:

  • An invited speaker panel on Technology Trends and Forecasting. The Medical Informatics Section is the primary sponsor. Secondary sponsors include the Leadership/Management, Medical Library Education, and Technical Services Sections. The Molecular Biology and Genomics SIG is also a secondary sponsor.
  • An invited speaker/contributed paper combination session on Bioinformatics. The Medical Informatics Section is the primary sponsor. The secondary sponsor is the Molecular Biology and Genomics SIG.
  • An invited speaker panel on Equitable Access to Essential Information for Health. The International Cooperation Section is the primary sponsor; the Medical Informatics Section is the secondary sponsor.
  • An invited speaker/contributed paper combination session on Public Health Informatics. The primary sponsor is the Public Health/Public Health Administration Section; the Medical Informatics Section is the secondary sponsor.
  • Secondary sponsorship of a Digital Devices to Go Roundtable. The primary sponsor is the Educational Media & Technology Section.

Annette Williams, with the assistance ofShannon Mueller, is developing an online module that incorporates instructional elements for the creation of a digital library. The module will be available online to section members by the end of March 2003. In mid-March, Annette communicated the progress of the module to the section membership and will receive initial feedback from interested volunteers.
